WorkZone Employment Services, operated by VerTek Diversified Services Ltd. was created in January 2005. Prior to this, starting in 2000, VerTek ran Connections Case Management Services in Penticton and Oliver, with itinerant services to other communities. In 2003, VerTek opened WorkZone Resource Centres in Oliver and Osoyoos, followed by Summerland in 2004. In 2005 both these services were amalgamated and offices were opened in six communities: Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos, Summerland, Keremeos, and Princeton. Employment counselling and job search services were added at the same time.
To understand WorkZone, you first need to understand – the person whose vision was responsible for starting WorkZone and leading its growth and development in the critical start-up years.
Pam Latimer was that leader until she passed away on June 12, 2008, and her influence is deeply felt as we move forward to expand her vision with respect and great pride.
Pam is best remembered for her sense of humour and soft heart – even though they were sometimes camouflaged by very definite ideas on how things were to be done, and a gruff exterior. Staff will recount stories, amidst hysterical laughter, of being stopped by Pam as they entered or left the building, (she occupied the back corner office by the staff door), and her uncanny ability to discern who had had a rough weekend, who was hiding a late night, and who was in the best position to survive a little teasing.
Pam Latimer worked incredibly hard to build the company and develop this service called WorkZone. She literally dedicated every waking minute to its success. Along the way she has made significant contributions to every community that claims a WorkZone office; has mentored countless employees – past and present; and provided hope for clients and members that had temporarily lost their own.
We miss her, we are indebted to her, and we are proud to be a part of what she has built. Her vision will carry on – and her ‘Can Do” attitude will continue to ring through the hallways.
Keep laughing through your day – she loved nothing more!! |
